Diabetes Awareness

In Gamma Chapter, our local philanthropy is Diabetes awareness. Diabetes is a disease in which your blood glucose, or blood sugar levels are too high. Insulin is a hormone that helps the glucose get into your cells to give them energy. With type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce insulin. Type 2 means that your body doesn’t use insulin properly.

How We Get Involved

Every Spring semester, Gamma Chapter volunteers and supports the American Diabetes Association by attending Kiss a Pig Gala and helping out with the event.

Kiss a Pig Gala

“Kiss a Pig Gala is the American Diabetes  Association’s top black-tie fundraiser in the nation hosted by the Northwest Arkansas Chapter.

It is also the largest grossing and most attended charity gala in the state of Arkansas with the community having ranked it as the #1 charity event for nine years in a row (2007-2015).

The formal affair hosts over 1750 guests to an evening of dinner, dancing, live entertainment, auctions and the infamous pig kissing ceremony.

The success of Kiss a Pig is largely due to the support of 10-12 business leaders who serve as candidates and compete in a brief fundraising contest to raise the most dollars for diabetes research and programs.

In return, the top fundraiser earns the privilege of kissing the pig at the gala to show appreciation for the animal’s heroic role in diabetes research as the first source of insulin.

Event proceeds are used to fund diabetes research, advocacy and educational programs for all children and adults with type 1, type 2, gestational and prediabetes in Northwest Arkansas”.
